Description

Pathogen and disease type. Sida alagoasense begomovirus is a viral pathogen belonging to the Begomovirus genus of the Geminiviridae family. It is characterized by a circular single-stranded DNA genome. The virus causes systemic infections in plants, hijacking host cellular machinery to replicate, which results in developmental abnormalities and severe physiological stress for the infected host.

Host range. The virus primarily infects weeds of the Sida genus, particularly Sida acuta. However, its host range is a concern for agronomists, as related geminiviruses often have the potential to cross-infect important agricultural crops, especially those within the Malvaceae family. Monitoring wild flora near agricultural lands is critical for preventing potential cross-species transmission.

Symptoms and signs of infection. Typical symptoms include severe mosaic patterns on leaves, interveinal chlorosis, leaf curling, and significant stunting of the entire plant. In infected crops, the formation of reproductive organs may be severely impaired, leading to flower abscission or reduced fruit set. The degree of symptom expression often depends on the timing of infection and the susceptibility of the specific host plant.

Conditions for development and spread. The transmission of Sida alagoasense is strictly mediated by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. The virus is acquired and transmitted by the insect in a persistent-circulative manner. Outbreaks are highly correlated with the migration patterns and population density of the whitefly, which are in turn influenced by warm temperatures and the availability of suitable host plants year-round.

Harmfulness and preventive measures. This virus causes substantial economic losses by reducing yields and affecting the quality of crops. Effective management relies on an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy:

  • rigorous control of whitefly populations through systemic insecticides;
  • eradication of reservoir weeds (Sida spp.) in and around fields;
  • use of virus-free planting material;
  • implementation of cultural practices such as crop rotation and physical barriers.
