Description
Pathogen and type of disease. Begomovirus sidaflavaneti is a viral pathogen classified within the Begomovirus genus of the Geminiviridae family. It causes systemic plant disease by infecting the phloem tissues, which leads to significant disruption of nutrient transport, physiological decline, and severe economic losses in sensitive botanical hosts.
Affected crops. The primary hosts are plants of the Sida genus, belonging to the Malvaceae family. While the host range focuses on these species, the potential for spillover to other related malvaceous crops poses a persistent threat to agricultural productivity in tropical and subtropical climates where the host plants are prevalent.
Symptoms and signs of infection. Infected plants typically exhibit characteristic yellow mosaic patterns on the foliage, often accompanied by leaf distortion, curling, and puckering. Stunting is a common feature, as the virus severely limits the metabolic activity of the plant, resulting in reduced biomass, poor flowering, and diminished yields compared to healthy specimens.
Conditions for development and spread. The virus is transmitted in a persistent, circulative manner by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. The epidemiology of the disease is heavily dependent on the population dynamics of the whitefly vector, which thrives in warm, humid environments, facilitating rapid transmission between diseased weed reservoirs and susceptible crop plants.
Protection and prevention measures. Management strategies rely on vector control and cultural practices to minimize viral spread. This includes the application of systemic insecticides to manage whitefly populations, the elimination of alternative weed hosts from field margins, and the use of resistant crop varieties to prevent establishment of the infection.
