Affected Crops
The primary hosts of this virus are members of the Sida genus. However, it also affects various plants within the Malvaceae family, including economically important crops such as cotton and okra. Many wild species within these families act as asymptomatic reservoirs, maintaining the virus in the environment throughout the growing season.
Symptoms and Signs
Infected plants exhibit characteristic yellow mosaic patterns on the foliage, often accompanied by leaf curling, crinkling, and distortion. Stunted plant growth is a common consequence of the infection, which results in reduced photosynthetic surface area. Severe cases lead to a significant decrease in flowering and fruit formation, ultimately impacting the harvest yield.
Conditions for Development and Spread
The virus is exclusively transmitted by the tobacco whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) in a persistent, circulative manner. The disease spreads rapidly in warm and humid environments, where the whitefly populations proliferate. Agricultural practices that allow for high weed density and high insect vector populations significantly exacerbate the incidence of the virus.
Harmfulness and Control Measures
The virus poses a major threat to agricultural productivity, leading to high economic losses. Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:
