Sida yellow vein virus is a plant pathogen classified within the Begomovirus genus. This viral infection specifically affects members of the Malvaceae family, primarily species of the Sida genus, disrupting normal plant physiological functions through the accumulation of viral particles in the vascular tissues.

The host range is primarily focused on wild and occasionally cultivated Malvaceae plants. Given the prevalence of the Sida genus in various climate zones, this virus can establish reservoirs that act as a constant source of infection for surrounding susceptible vegetation.

Typical symptoms include distinct chlorosis of the leaf veins, often referred to as yellow vein clearing or mosaic patterns. Over time, these symptoms progress, leading to stunting, leaf curling, and a reduction in the overall vigour and reproductive capacity of the infected plants.

The disease is spread through a vector-mediated mechanism, specifically by the tobacco whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). The transmission is persistent, meaning that once the insect acquires the virus, it remains a vector for the duration of its life, effectively spreading the pathogen within and between plant populations.

Management strategies focus on vector suppression and sanitation. Key practices include the removal of weed reservoirs, regular monitoring of insect populations, and the targeted application of insecticides to manage whitefly outbreaks, thereby minimizing the transmission rate and preventing large-scale epidemics in susceptible areas.
