Begomovirus sidaflavavietnamense is a viral pathogen classified within the genus Begomovirus of the Geminiviridae family. The virus contains a circular single-stranded DNA genome. It is a systemic disease that severely affects the physiological development of the host plant by interfering with its metabolic processes and vascular transport.
The primary hosts of this virus are species belonging to the Sida genus, frequently found in tropical environments, particularly in Vietnam. While the virus often circulates in wild weeds, it represents a potential risk to surrounding agricultural crops through the movement of viral vectors, making it a subject of interest in tropical plant pathology.
Symptoms of infection are highly distinct, manifesting as yellow mosaic patterns, leaf yellowing (chlorosis), and severe distortion of the foliage. Infected plants exhibit significantly stunted growth, reduced leaf size, and shortened internodes, which drastically impact the photosynthetic capacity and overall biomass of the plant.
The transmission of this begomovirus is mediated by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci.
