Description
Pathogen and disease type. The Sida yellow mosaic virus (SiYMV) is a viral pathogen classified within the genus Begomovirus, family Geminiviridae. It is a systemic disease that induces significant alterations in the host's genetic and biochemical processes, leading to stunted growth and severe physiological stress.
Host range. The primary host for this virus is Sida acuta, a common weed in tropical and subtropical regions. However, the virus poses a substantial threat to economically important crops, including cotton, various vegetable species, and leguminous plants, effectively bridging the gap between wild weeds and agricultural crops.
Symptoms and signs of infection. The infection is marked by distinct yellow mottling or mosaic patterns on the leaves. Infected plants often show curling, upward rolling of the leaf margins, and crinkling. Severe infections lead to reduced foliage size, shortened internodes, and significant flower abortion, which directly impacts the yield potential.
Conditions for development and spread. The virus is transmitted in a persistent, circulative manner by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. The spread is highly correlated with the population density of the vector, which thrives in warm and humid conditions. Wild host plants act as reservoirs, ensuring the survival of the virus during fallow periods.
