Description

Begomovirus sidamusivi is a pathogenic virus within the Begomovirus genus of the Geminiviridae family. As a viral disease, it causes significant physiological disturbances in host plants. The virus relies on a circular single-stranded DNA genome to replicate and hijack the metabolic processes of its hosts, leading to long-term crop failure if not managed early.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are plants in the Malvaceae family, most notably cotton (Gossypium hirsutum). Additionally, various wild weeds act as alternative hosts, creating a reservoir for the virus and facilitating its survival across different seasons. This complexity makes the complete eradication of the pathogen from agricultural areas extremely difficult.

Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as severe leaf curling, stunting of the entire plant, and characteristic yellowing or vein thickening. These structural changes prevent the plant from developing properly, significantly impacting the yield potential. In severe cases, the infected plants produce fewer bolls or exhibit poor fiber quality.

Transmission occurs exclusively through the silverleaf whitefly, Bemisia tabaci. The insect acquires the virus while feeding on infected sap and transmits it to healthy tissues during subsequent feeding events. Warm temperatures and high humidity levels are ideal environmental drivers that increase both the whitefly population and the transmission efficiency of the virus.

Effective prevention and control strategies include:

  • Applying systemic insecticides to manage whitefly populations effectively.
  • Removing and destroying symptomatic plants to eliminate the source of the virus.
  • Implementing biological control measures to naturally suppress the insect vectors.
  • Utilizing genetically resistant or tolerant crop varieties specifically bred for the region.
  • Maintaining strict field hygiene to remove wild host weeds near cotton fields.
