The causal agent of this disease is Begomovirus sidastri, a member of the Geminiviridae family. As a typical begomovirus, it contains a circular single-stranded DNA genome and induces systemic infection in susceptible host plants. It is a significant phytopathogen affecting both weed species and commercially grown cultivars.

The primary host for this virus is the weed Sida rhombifolia, which serves as a perennial reservoir for the pathogen. Agricultural crops that are susceptible to Begomovirus sidastri infection include cotton, okra, various legumes, and tomato varieties, especially when cultivated in tropical and subtropical environmental conditions.

Symptoms of the infection involve bright yellow mosaic patterns on leaves, interveinal chlorosis, and severe leaf curling or distortion. Infected plants exhibit stunted growth, reduced leaf size, and significant yield losses due to the impairment of normal physiological functions such as photosynthesis and nutrient translocation.

The virus is transmitted in a persistent, circulative manner by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. The insect acquires the virus while feeding on infected plant tissues and spreads it to healthy plants during subsequent feeding sessions.
