The causative agent of the disease is the Sida golden mosaic Brazil virus, a member of the Begomovirus genus within the Geminiviridae family. This DNA virus primarily affects plants in the Malvaceae family, particularly wild species of Sida that act as natural reservoirs for the pathogen in Brazilian ecosystems.

The virus is categorized as a vector-borne pathogen, transmitted in a persistent, circulative manner by the silverleaf whitefly, Bemisia tabaci. Once the whitefly acquires the virus by feeding on infected phloem sap, it remains capable of transmitting the pathogen to healthy plants for the duration of its lifespan, making it an extremely efficient vector.

The typical symptoms of Sida golden mosaic infection involve severe leaf chlorosis, characterized by bright yellow mosaic patterns and interveinal yellowing. Affected plants often exhibit stunted growth, leaf deformation, and reduced overall vigor, which significantly impairs photosynthetic efficiency and decreases biomass yield in susceptible crops.
