Sida golden mosaic Florida virus

Pathogen and disease type. Begomovirus sidaureifloridaense, commonly known as Sida golden mosaic Florida virus, belongs to the family Geminiviridae. This viral pathogen contains a single-stranded DNA genome and is responsible for systemic plant infections. It is characterized by high adaptability and creates significant physiological disturbances within host cells.

Host range. The primary host for this virus is the weed Sida acuta (common wireweed). However, the virus also poses a threat to various members of the Malvaceae family. In agricultural settings, it can occasionally jump to related economic crops, leading to severe yield losses in regions where the vector population is dense.

Symptoms and signs. Infected plants display distinct yellow mosaic patterns on their foliage, which is the most reliable indicator of the disease. In addition to discoloration, plants often show leaf curling, crinkling, and significant stunting. As the infection progresses, the reduced photosynthetic surface area leads to poor fruit set and reduced quality of the final harvest.

Conditions for development. The virus is transmitted exclusively by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci in a circulative, non-propagative manner. Transmission is highly dependent on environmental conditions: warm and humid climates support rapid population growth of whiteflies, thereby facilitating the widespread dissemination of the virus throughout the field.

Measures of protection and prevention. Managing the virus requires a holistic approach focused on vector control and environmental sanitation. Key practices include:

• Rigorous weeding to remove host plants like Sida species from the field surroundings.
• Deployment of fine-mesh netting in greenhouse production to exclude whiteflies.
• Implementation of an integrated pest management (IPM) program to keep whitefly populations below the economic threshold.
• Use of systemic insecticides to disrupt the transmission cycle.
