Description
Begomovirus sidaureilaraense is a plant pathogen belonging to the genus Begomovirus within the Geminiviridae family. It is responsible for causing mosaic-type viral diseases, primarily affecting the vascular system of the host, which severely disrupts the plant's ability to develop and reproduce normally.
The primary host range of this virus includes plants within the Malvaceae family, particularly those of the genus Sida. Due to the nature of the virus, it is capable of infecting various related agricultural crops, posing a significant risk to yield stability and quality in regions where both the host plants and the vectors are present.
Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as yellow mosaic patterns, leaf curling, and severe chlorosis. These physiological changes restrict photosynthesis, resulting in stunted plant growth, reduced fruit development, and overall loss of biomass, which significantly impacts the commercial value of the crops.
Transmission of the virus occurs primarily through insect vectors, with the whitefly Bemisia tabaci being the most critical agent.
