Sida mosaic begomovirus (Begomovirus sidavulgaris) is a plant virus belonging to the Geminiviridae family, which is known for its circular single-stranded DNA genome. It primarily affects plants within the Malvaceae family, posing a significant risk to various wild and agricultural species in affected geographical areas.
The virus is hosted by several species, most notably Sida vulgaris, which serves as a reservoir. Its ability to infect plants related to cultivated crops makes it a subject of agricultural concern, as the virus can potentially impact fiber crop production and other horticultural plants sharing common vectors and ecological niches.
Infected plants typically display clear symptoms such as mosaic-like patterns on leaves, interveinal chlorosis, and severe leaf curling. As the infection progresses, stunted growth and general deformation of the plant canopy are common, leading to a substantial decrease in photosynthetic efficiency and biomass accumulation.
