Begomovirus siegesbeckiae is a viral pathogen belonging to the Geminiviridae family. It is characterized by a monopartite or bipartite single-stranded DNA genome and is primarily transmitted by insect vectors. As a member of the Begomovirus genus, it significantly impacts both wild flora and agricultural crops, causing systemic infection that disrupts the plant's vascular and metabolic systems.
The virus primarily affects species within the Asteraceae family, with Siegesbeckia serving as a key host. However, its host range is dynamic, and under favorable ecological conditions, it can cross-infect economically important vegetable crops. The virus is classified as a significant threat in regions where its specific insect vectors thrive year-round, leading to chronic field infestations.
Symptoms of the disease are indicative of systemic viral stress. Key signs include mosaic patterns, severe leaf curling (leaf curl), yellowing (chlorosis), and stunting of the entire plant architecture. Infected plants often show reduced leaf size and abnormal flowering patterns, leading to significant yield losses in agricultural production due to poor fruit development and weakened plant vigor.
The transmission of this virus is strictly dependent on the whitefly Bemisia tabaci.
