Solanum aureivenae begomovirus is a plant pathogenic virus belonging to the genus Begomovirus, family Geminiviridae. Its genetic material is characterized by single-stranded circular DNA. This virus acts as a systemic pathogen that colonizes the phloem tissues, disrupting the plant's physiological functions and nutrient transport.

The virus primarily affects Solanaceous crops, including tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and potatoes. It also possesses a broad host range among various weed species, which act as natural reservoirs for the virus, allowing it to survive during the off-season and re-infect new crops when conditions become favorable.

The characteristic symptoms of this disease include interveinal chlorosis, which manifests as a distinct golden mosaic pattern along the leaf veins. As the infection progresses, affected plants may exhibit stunted growth, leaf curling, crinkling, and a significant reduction in fruit set and overall quality.

Transmission of the virus is strictly mediated by the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). The vector acquires the virus by feeding on infected phloem sap and subsequently transmits it to healthy plants. High temperatures and humidity levels significantly promote whitefly proliferation, leading to rapid disease dissemination.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this virus. Key strategies include:

  • Utilizing resistant or tolerant plant varieties.
  • Rigorous control of the whitefly population with systemic insecticides.
  • Eradication of weed reservoirs surrounding the cultivation area.
