Solanum australiense leaf curl virus

Begomovirus solanumaustraliaense

Description

Pathogen and type of disease. Begomovirus solanumaustraliaense is a viral disease caused by a member of the Begomovirus genus within the Geminiviridae family. It is a systemic infection characterized by a single-stranded DNA genome. The virus infects the plant's vascular tissues, disrupting physiological processes such as nutrient translocation and photosynthesis.

Affected crops. The virus primarily affects crops within the Solanaceae family. Economically important plants like tomatoes, peppers, and potatoes are highly susceptible. Furthermore, certain weed species act as natural reservoirs, maintaining the virus in the environment between growing seasons and serving as initial sources of infection.

Symptoms and signs of infection. Typical symptoms include upward curling of leaves, chlorosis, and stunted growth. The plant appearance becomes distorted, often with shortened internodes, giving it a bushy, stunted look. Flowering and fruit set are severely impacted, leading to significant yield reduction.

  • Upward leaf curling
  • Interveinal chlorosis
  • Severe stunting of the plant
  • Deformed flowers and floral abscission
  • Reduced fruit size and quality

Conditions for development and severity. The virus is transmitted in a persistent manner by the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). The spread of the disease is highly correlated with the density of the whitefly population, which thrives in warm and humid conditions. The damage is severe, often resulting in total crop failure as infected plants cease to develop productive fruit.

Protection and prevention measures. Since there is no curative treatment for viral infections, prevention is the primary strategy. This involves aggressive integrated pest management (IPM) to control the whitefly vector using insecticides, sticky traps, and biological controls. Maintaining a weed-free environment, utilizing resistant cultivars, and implementing strict hygiene in greenhouses are essential for minimizing risks.
