Bangladesh solanum begomovirus
Begomovirus solanumbangladeshense
Description
Causative agent and disease type. The Bangladesh solanum begomovirus (Begomovirus solanumbangladeshense) is a viral plant pathogen belonging to the Geminiviridae family. It causes systemic infections that disrupt plant hormonal balance and metabolic processes. As a member of the begomovirus genus, it relies on insect vectors for transmission, making it a difficult pathogen to control once it enters a field.
Susceptible crops. The virus primarily affects crops within the Solanaceae family. Tomato, pepper, and eggplant are the most severely impacted species. Furthermore, numerous wild weeds act as reservoirs for the virus, ensuring the pathogen persists in the environment even when main commercial crops are not present.
Symptoms and signs. Infected plants typically exhibit severe mosaic patterns, chlorosis, and leaf curling. The foliage may become crinkled, distorted, and stunted, leading to a bush-like appearance of the plant. Flowers often fail to produce fruit, or the resulting fruits are malformed, significantly reducing yield and marketability.
Conditions for development and spread. The primary vector for this virus is the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). Spread is most rapid during warm, dry weather conditions, which favor the proliferation and migration of the insect vector. The virus is acquired by the whitefly after feeding on an infected plant and is then transmitted to healthy plants during subsequent feeding sessions.
Protection and prevention measures. Since there is no curative treatment for viral infections in plants, management focus must remain on preventative strategies:
- Utilizing resistant or tolerant crop varieties where available.
- Strict control of whitefly populations through integrated pest management (IPM).
- Sanitation, including the removal and destruction of weeds and volunteer plants.
- Use of physical barriers like insect-proof nets in greenhouses.
- Strategic timing of planting to avoid peak insect activity periods.
