Solanum yellow leaf curl virus

Begomovirus solanumflavuscontorsionis

Description

The Solanum yellow leaf curl virus (Begomovirus solanumflavuscontorsionis) is a destructive plant pathogen belonging to the genus Begomovirus. It is recognized as a significant threat to agricultural productivity, specifically targeting plants within the Solanaceae family, and causes severe physiological imbalances in infected crops.

The disease is primarily transmitted by the silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci), which serves as the exclusive vector. The virus particles circulate within the insect and are injected into the plant tissues during the feeding process. This transmission mechanism allows the virus to spread rapidly throughout fields, especially in warm climates where vector populations thrive.

Symptoms of the infection typically include yellowing of the leaf margins, severe inward curling, and upward cupping of leaves. Infected plants show stunted growth, shortened internodes, and a reduction in fruit set. In many cases, flowers may drop prematurely, or if fruits do develop, they are often undersized and of poor market quality, leading to total harvest loss.

Environmental conditions, particularly high temperatures and low humidity, are major drivers for the development and spread of this virus. These conditions accelerate the life cycle of the whitefly vector, leading to exponential population growth. Furthermore, the presence of alternative weed hosts in the proximity of cultivated fields serves as a continuous source of inoculum for the virus.

Control strategies for the virus focus on rigorous integrated pest management (IPM) practices to prevent infection. Effective approaches include:

  • deploying resistant or tolerant cultivars,
  • implementing strict weed control programs to eliminate virus reservoirs,
  • using physical barriers like insect-proof netting,
  • monitoring and controlling whitefly populations with systemic insecticides,
  • maintaining crop-free periods to break the disease cycle.
