Pathogen and disease type. Begomovirus solanumflavusvietnamense is a plant-pathogenic virus belonging to the Geminiviridae family. It causes systemic infections in hosts, leading to significant physiological disruption. As an obligate parasite, the virus relies on its host's cellular machinery to replicate, causing substantial economic losses in agricultural production.

Host range. The virus primarily infects members of the Solanaceae family. Tomatoes, bell peppers, and eggplants are the most economically significant hosts affected by this pathogen. It can also persist in various weed species found in agricultural landscapes, which act as primary viral reservoirs between cropping seasons.

Symptoms and signs. The most characteristic symptom is yellowing of the foliage, which may appear as interveinal chlorosis or general leaf discoloration. Infected plants often show stunted growth, leaf curling, and severe distortion of young shoots. Flower abortion and malformed fruit are common in advanced stages of the disease, leading to a total loss of marketable produce.

Development and spread. The virus is exclusively transmitted by the whitefly complex, most notably Bemisia tabaci. The spread occurs when the insect feeds on infected plant sap and acquires the virus, subsequently transmitting it to healthy plants. High temperatures and humidity accelerate the lifecycle of the whitefly, leading to exponential increases in disease transmission rates.

Management and prevention. Controlling the whitefly population is the cornerstone of managing this begomovirus. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices, such as the use of yellow sticky traps, insect-proof netting in greenhouses, and targeted insecticide applications, are essential. Additionally, growers should focus on planting resistant varieties and maintaining a strict weed control program to eliminate potential viral reservoirs.
