As a member of the genus Begomovirus, it is characterized by a bipartite or monopartite genome consisting of single-stranded DNA. This virus poses a significant threat to global agriculture, as it induces severe physiological stress in susceptible plant hosts, leading to substantial economic losses.
The host range of this virus is primarily restricted to the Solanaceae family. Economically important crops such as tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum), peppers (Capsicum spp.), and eggplants (Solanum melongena) are highly susceptible. The pathogen is often identified in warmer regions, where favorable environmental conditions support the continuous presence of its insect vectors.
Symptoms of the disease are indicative of viral interference with normal plant development. Typical clinical signs include severe leaf curling, distortion, stunting, and mosaic patterns. Affected plants show reduced vigor, leading to poor fruit set and significant yield reduction.
