The primary hosts for this virus are solanaceous crops, with tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants being the most susceptible. The virus can persist in various weed hosts, which serve as reservoirs between growing seasons. This versatility allows the pathogen to establish itself in diverse agricultural landscapes, from small greenhouses to large-scale open-field operations.
Symptoms of the infection typically include interveinal chlorosis, where the leaf tissues between the veins lose their green pigmentation. As the disease progresses, infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, leaf curling, and severe distortion of the foliage. These physiological changes result in significant yield loss, as the plant cannot effectively photosynthesize or support fruit development.
Transmission occurs primarily through the silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) in a persistent circulative manner.
