Begomovirus solanumiranense is a viral plant disease caused by a virus belonging to the Begomovirus genus of the Geminiviridae family. This pathogen is a ssDNA virus, commonly found in temperate and subtropical climates, posing a significant challenge to global solanaceous crop production.
The primary hosts of this virus are members of the Solanaceae family. Economically significant crops such as tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants are most susceptible to infection. Furthermore, several wild solanaceous weeds act as permanent reservoirs for the virus, allowing it to survive between growing seasons.
Symptoms of the infection typically include leaf mosaic, interveinal chlorosis, and severe leaf curling or deformation. Infected plants show stunted growth, reduced photosynthetic efficiency, and often produce misshapen or undersized fruits, which substantially diminishes the overall harvest quality.
The virus is transmitted by insect vectors, most notably the tobacco whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). The spread is highly correlated with environmental conditions that favor whitefly activity; as the insect feeds on plant sap, it introduces the virus into the vascular system of healthy hosts, initiating new infection cycles.
