Solanum leaf curl begomovirus (Begomovirus solanumjapanense) is a viral pathogen belonging to the genus Begomovirus within the Geminiviridae family. It causes severe systemic disease in plants, leading to significant morphological changes and physiological stress, which ultimately reduces overall yield and crop quality.
The virus primarily affects plant species within the Solanaceae family. Major susceptible crops include tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and various wild nightshades. These weeds often act as environmental reservoirs, facilitating the spread of the disease to adjacent agricultural fields throughout the growing season.
The transmission of this virus is strictly dependent on the whitefly vector, specifically Bemisia tabaci. The insect acquires the virus while feeding on infected sap, and the pathogen subsequently circulates within the vector. Because the virus is not seed-borne or mechanically transmissible under typical field conditions, the management of whitefly populations is the primary goal of any disease control program.
Symptoms typically include characteristic leaf curling, yellowing (chlorosis), and stunting of the plant. The leaves often become leathery, distorted, and significantly reduced in size. Affected plants exhibit shortened internodes, resulting in a stunted, bushy appearance.
