The causative agent of the disease is Begomovirus solanummusivi, a viral pathogen within the Geminiviridae family. This virus infects plant cells at a molecular level, disrupting metabolic pathways and causing systemic damage that affects the entire physiology of the host plant.

The primary hosts of this virus are members of the Solanaceae family, including tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. The virus is highly adaptable and can persist in various weed species, which act as critical reservoirs for the virus during periods when primary host crops are not present.

Common symptoms include distinct mosaic patterns on leaves, characterized by chlorotic patches, leaf curling, and severe stunting. Infected plants often show stunted growth, abnormal fruit development, and a significant reduction in overall yield quality, making the affected crop non-marketable.
