Solanum nigrum begomovirus (Begomovirus solanumnigeriaense) is a viral pathogen of the Geminiviridae family, primarily recognized for causing severe systemic diseases in vegetable crops. As a single-stranded DNA virus, it poses a major challenge to agricultural systems by hijacking host plant resources to facilitate its replication and spread.

The primary hosts of this virus are members of the Solanaceae family, particularly tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. The pathogen can also persist in various weed hosts, which function as environmental reservoirs. These wild plants often do not show severe symptoms, yet they allow the virus to remain present in the ecosystem even during off-seasons.

Infected plants typically display characteristic symptoms such as leaf curling, yellow vein mosaic, stunting, and severe leaf deformation. Affected plants often fail to reach maturity, and if they do produce fruits, the fruits are typically smaller, discolored, and commercially non-viable, leading to significant economic losses for producers.

The transmission of this virus is exclusively biological, mediated by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci in a circulative-persistent manner. Once the insect acquires the virus during feeding, it becomes a lifelong vector.
