Solanum retorridi leaf curl virus (Begomovirus solanumretorridi) is a plant pathogenic virus belonging to the Geminiviridae family. As a member of the Begomovirus genus, it possesses a circular single-stranded DNA genome and relies on insect vectors for transmission. It poses a significant threat to agricultural production in regions where the vector population is endemic.
The primary hosts of this virus are members of the Solanaceae family, specifically tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. The virus is capable of colonizing various tissues within the host plant, disrupting normal physiological functions and causing severe developmental abnormalities that ultimately compromise the yield and fruit quality.
Symptoms of the infection typically include upward curling of the leaf margins, chlorosis, and the development of a crinkled texture on the foliage. The plant exhibits severe stunting, reduced internode length, and a bushy appearance. In advanced stages, fruit production is drastically reduced, and the remaining fruits may appear misshapen or undersized.
The disease is transmitted by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci in a persistent circulative manner. Once the whitefly acquires the virus through feeding on an infected plant, it remains infectious for the remainder of its life cycle, facilitating the rapid spread of the virus within a crop field or greenhouse environment.
Management of the disease requires a robust integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. This involves the rigorous control of whitefly populations through the application of insecticides and the use of physical barriers like fine-mesh netting in protected cropping. Additionally, the destruction of symptomatic plants and the elimination of weed hosts are critical to breaking the disease cycle.
