Begomovirus solanumrugosi, commonly associated with the Solanum rugose leaf curl complex, is a significant viral plant pathogen belonging to the Geminiviridae family. It is characterized by a circular single-stranded DNA genome. The virus causes severe systemic infections that disrupt the physiological processes of the host, leading to significant yield losses in agricultural production.

The primary hosts for this virus are plants within the Solanaceae family, including tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. These crops are highly susceptible, and infection often leads to rapid deterioration of plant health. Wild nightshades and common weeds often serve as reservoir hosts, maintaining the viral presence in the environment throughout the growing season.

Key symptoms include severe leaf crinkling, rugosity (wrinkling), yellowing (chlorosis), and stunting of the entire plant. The leaves may show characteristic mosaic patterns, and the apical meristems often become distorted. Infected plants typically exhibit reduced fruit set and poor fruit quality, rendering them unsuitable for market distribution.

The virus is transmitted by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci in a persistent, circulative manner. Once the insect acquires the virus through feeding on an infected host, it remains a vector for the remainder of its life. High temperatures and humidity facilitate the development of large whitefly populations, leading to rapid disease spread within greenhouses and fields.

Management and prevention focus on vector control and host plant resistance. Strategies include the use of fine-mesh insect screening for greenhouse cultivation, systematic removal of symptomatic plants to reduce the inoculum load, and the application of integrated pest management (IPM) to control Bemisia tabaci populations.
