Solanaceous begomovirus (Begomovirus solanumseveri) is a serious viral pathogen belonging to the Geminiviridae family. It causes systemic infections in host plants, interfering with essential biological functions such as nutrient transport and photosynthesis, which leads to significant physiological stress and reduced crop productivity.
The host range of this virus primarily includes members of the Solanaceae family. Tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants are among the most economically important crops susceptible to this disease. Additionally, various weed species act as virus reservoirs, making it difficult to manage the inoculum levels in agricultural environments throughout the growing season.
Symptoms of the disease are diverse and include severe mosaic patterns, leaf curling, crinkling, and distinct chlorosis. Infected plants exhibit stunted growth, shortened internodes, and poor development of reproductive organs. If infection occurs early in the plant's life cycle, it may lead to total fruit set failure or the production of unmarketable, malformed fruit.
The transmission of Begomovirus solanumseveri is primarily mediated by insect vectors, most notably the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). When these insects feed on infected phloem sap, they acquire the virus and subsequently transmit it to healthy plants. Outbreaks are often correlated with warm, humid environmental conditions that favor the rapid reproduction and spread of whitefly populations.
