Solanum severugosi leaf curl virus

Begomovirus solanumseverugosi is a serious plant pathogen within the Geminiviridae family. As a typical begomovirus, it possesses a circular single-stranded DNA genome and induces severe systemic diseases in plants, primarily targeting members of the Solanaceae family, leading to significant economic losses in commercial vegetable production.

Major crops affected by this virus include tomatoes, peppers, and potatoes. The virus is highly versatile, being capable of infecting various weed hosts, which serve as crucial reservoirs that maintain the viral load in the ecosystem throughout the year and facilitate the spread of the disease to newly planted crop fields.

Symptoms of the infection are quite distinctive and include interveinal chlorosis, severe leaf curling, leaf puckering, and stunting of the entire plant. Due to inhibited internode growth, the plants develop a bushy appearance. Reproductive structures are also severely affected, often resulting in flower shedding and a sharp decline in fruit set and overall yield quality.

The transmission mechanism of the virus is exclusively mediated by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. The insect acquires the virus while feeding on infected phloem sap and can transmit it to healthy plants after a latent period. The spread of the disease is highly correlated with the environmental conditions that favor rapid whitefly reproduction, such as warm temperatures and high humidity levels.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach, as there are no direct chemical controls for viral diseases. Preventive strategies include:
