Description

The causative agent of this disease is the Solanum sinaloaense leaf curl virus, a member of the Begomovirus genus within the Geminiviridae family. It is a DNA virus that disrupts the normal physiological processes of plants, primarily affecting those in the Solanaceae family by hijacking the host's cellular machinery for replication.

The virus primarily impacts vegetable crops such as tomatoes and peppers. In susceptible host plants, the virus induces systemic infection, spreading throughout the vascular tissue, which leads to significant physiological stress and a substantial reduction in the quality and quantity of the harvest.

Symptoms include severe leaf curling, distortion of leaf margins, interveinal chlorosis, and general stunting of the plant. As the infection progresses, the growth points become highly deformed, and internodes become shortened, giving the plant a bushy and sickly appearance that prevents proper flowering and fruit development.

The development and spread of the virus are entirely dependent on the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. This insect acts as a persistent vector; once it feeds on an infected plant, it remains capable of transmitting the virus for the remainder of its life. Warm climate conditions accelerate both the life cycle of the whitefly and the rate of viral transmission.

Prevention and management strategies focus on minimizing vector contact and eliminating potential reservoirs. Effective control requires a combination of chemical, cultural, and mechanical methods to lower the pest population and limit initial infection.
