Begomovirus solanumtanzaniaense is a viral pathogen belonging to the Begomovirus genus within the Geminiviridae family. It is characterized by a circular single-stranded DNA genome. This virus is a serious concern for agriculture as it causes systemic infections, leading to severe physiological disruptions in host plants. It is transmitted in a persistent circulative manner by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci.

The host range of this virus is primarily restricted to the Solanaceae family. Economically important crops such as tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum) and potatoes are the most affected. In addition to cultivated plants, several weed species within the Solanaceae family can act as alternate hosts, maintaining the viral reservoir in the environment even when primary crops are not present.

Infected plants exhibit characteristic symptoms, including leaf curling, crumpling, and severe mosaic patterns. Affected plants often display stunted growth with shortened internodes, resulting in a bushy appearance. Reproductive structures are frequently impacted, leading to reduced flowering and fruit set, with the fruits that do develop often being malformed, small, or discolored.

The spread of the virus is intrinsically linked to the population dynamics of the whitefly vector. Environmental factors such as high temperature and reduced rainfall significantly boost whitefly activity and reproduction, facilitating rapid disease transmission within and between fields. The ability of the virus to be transmitted by whiteflies within a short feeding period makes it highly invasive.

Management of the disease requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach centered on vector control and sanitation. Essential preventative and control measures include:

  • Monitoring whitefly populations to trigger timely insecticide applications.
  • Planting resistant or tolerant cultivars when available.
  • Removing and destroying infected plants to reduce the inoculum source.
  • Implementing strict weed control programs to eliminate alternative viral hosts.
  • Using physical barriers like fine-mesh insect nets for high-value solanaceous crops.
  • Applying systemic insecticides to reduce early-stage infection risk.
