Begomovirus solanumtoliaraense is a viral pathogen belonging to the Begomovirus genus. This virus causes systemic infections in various solanaceous crops, significantly impacting global agriculture by inducing severe physiological disorders that lead to substantial economic losses in production.

The primary hosts of this virus include economic staples such as tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. In addition to cultivated plants, several weed species within the Solanaceae family act as asymptomatic reservoirs, allowing the virus to persist in the field environment throughout the year.

Symptoms of the infection manifest primarily as severe leaf curling, yellowing (chlorosis) of the leaf margins, and stunted growth of the entire plant. Infected plants exhibit shortened internodes and reduced foliage production, which directly impairs photosynthesis and prevents proper fruit development, resulting in unmarketable produce.

The virus is transmitted by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci in a circulative, persistent manner. The spread of the disease is highly correlated with the population dynamics of the vector, which thrives in warm, dry climates. Once a whitefly ingests the virus, it remains capable of transmitting it to healthy plants for the duration of its lifespan.
