Solanumugandaense begomovirus is a viral pathogen of the genus Begomovirus, characterized by a single-stranded circular DNA genome. It is recognized as a significant threat to agricultural stability, particularly in regions where Solanaceae crops are cultivated extensively.
This virus primarily infects plants within the Solanaceae family. Economically important crops such as tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum), peppers, and eggplants are the most susceptible hosts, experiencing severe physiological disruption upon infection.
Clinical signs of the disease include mosaic patterning on leaves, yellowing (chlorosis), leaf curling, and severe stunting of the overall plant architecture. Affected plants typically produce smaller, distorted fruits, or fail to produce any fruit at all, leading to significant yield losses in commercial production.
The transmission of this pathogen is strictly mediated by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. The insect acquires the virus during feeding and acts as a persistent vector, meaning once it acquires the virus, it can transmit it to healthy hosts for the duration of its lifespan. Environmental conditions that favor whitefly outbreaks directly correlate with increased disease incidence.
Management strategies must be integrated. Growers are advised to implement strict weed control to eliminate alternative hosts, deploy physical barriers such as insect-proof netting in greenhouses, and employ systematic insecticide programs to suppress whitefly populations. Developing and planting resistant cultivars remains the most effective long-term solution.
