Description
The causative agent is the Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), a member of the Begomovirus genus. This virus possesses a single-stranded DNA genome and induces systemic infection in plants, significantly disrupting the host's physiological processes, including photosynthetic efficiency and overall vigor.
While tomatoes are the primary host, the virus exhibits a broad host range including peppers, eggplants, beans, and various weed species. These weed hosts often serve as viral reservoirs, allowing the pathogen to persist between growing seasons and re-infect new plantings.
Characteristic symptoms include upward curling and chlorosis of the leaf margins, which eventually leads to stunted plant growth and a bushy appearance due to shortened internodes. Affected plants rarely set fruit, and those that do usually produce small, deformed, and commercially unviable specimens, causing severe economic losses.
Transmission is mediated exclusively by the silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) in a persistent circulative manner. Once the whitefly acquires the virus, it remains infectious for the rest of its life. High temperatures and dry climates provide optimal conditions for rapid whitefly proliferation, leading to explosive outbreaks of the disease.
Management of this virus requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to be effective. Key strategies include the deployment of virus-resistant tomato cultivars, the use of insect-proof netting in greenhouses, systematic monitoring and control of whitefly populations with insecticides, and rigorous sanitation practices to eliminate potential inoculum sources.
