Spinach begomovirus is a viral disease caused by pathogens belonging to the Begomovirus genus within the Geminiviridae family. These viruses are characterized by their unique twin-particle morphology and single-stranded DNA genome, which allow them to hijack plant cellular machinery for rapid systemic replication.

The primary host for this virus is spinach (Spinacia oleracea), though the virus often persists in various weed species that serve as a year-round inoculum reservoir. The virus spreads primarily through vascular tissue, systematically invading the entire plant structure shortly after the initial infection.

Symptoms of the disease are typically characterized by severe mosaic patterns, leaf curling, crinkling, and stunting of the plant.
