Synedrella yellow vein mosaic virus is a plant pathogen classified within the genus Begomovirus of the family Geminiviridae. This virus is characterized by a circular single-stranded DNA genome and is known for causing significant damage to various crops by inducing systemic viral disease, which interferes with plant hormonal balance and nutrient transport.
The virus has a wide host range, primarily affecting plants in the Asteraceae and Solanaceae families. Economically important crops such as tomatoes, peppers, and various ornamental plants are particularly susceptible. The weed Synedrella nodiflora serves as a critical primary host and a perennial reservoir for the virus, facilitating its survival in the environment.
Infected plants typically display symptoms such as intense yellowing of leaf veins, mosaic patterns, leaf curling, and severe stunting. The reduction in photosynthetic area and metabolic disruption lead to poor flower development and a drastic decrease in fruit set, which significantly impacts total yield and quality of the harvest.
