Description
Telfairia mosaic begomovirus (Begomovirus telfairiae) is a viral plant pathogen that primarily affects the Telfairia species within the Cucurbitaceae family. As a member of the Begomovirus genus, this DNA virus infiltrates plant cells, forcing them to produce viral proteins instead of essential nutrients for growth.
While the virus is named after the Telfairia plant, its host range may extend to other cucurbits like pumpkins and squashes, especially in agro-ecosystems where diverse cucurbitaceous crops are cultivated in proximity. This makes it a significant concern for tropical and subtropical agriculture.
Clinical signs of infection include striking yellow mosaic patterns on leaves, interveinal chlorosis, and severe stunting of the plant canopy. Leaves often become curled, brittle, and distorted, which drastically reduces the leaf area available for photosynthesis and limits the crop's yield potential.
Transmission occurs exclusively through the whitefly vector Bemisia tabaci. These insects acquire the virus by feeding on infected phloem and can transmit it to healthy plants within minutes. The efficiency of this transmission makes the virus exceptionally difficult to manage once it is introduced into a field.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Farmers should focus on:
- Monitoring and managing whitefly populations using systemic insecticides.
- Implementing strict field sanitation to remove alternative weed hosts.
- Using certified virus-free seedlings for planting.
- Applying reflective mulches to deter whitefly landing on young, vulnerable plants.
