Vernoniavenae begomovirus is a plant pathogen classified within the Begomovirus genus of the Geminiviridae family. As a DNA virus, it infects the host plant at the vascular level, specifically colonizing the phloem, which leads to systemic physiological dysfunction and stunted development of the affected plant species.
This virus primarily affects hosts within the Asteraceae family. Its common occurrence in specific weed species of the Vernonia genus marks these plants as natural reservoirs, posing a significant risk of spillover infection to various agricultural crops cultivated in adjacent areas or tropical and subtropical regions.
Infected plants typically exhibit distinct symptoms, including yellow mosaic patterns on leaves, leaf curling, crinkling, and significant chlorosis.
