The common begomovirus, a member of the Geminiviridae family, is a significant plant pathogen characterized by a circular single-stranded DNA genome. These viruses are predominantly transmitted by the whitefly complex, specifically Bemisia tabaci, which acts as the primary vector in spreading the infection within agricultural ecosystems.
Host plants typically include a wide range of economically important crops such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and various cucurbits. The virus causes systemic infections, leading to profound physiological changes in the host plant and affecting its ability to produce high-quality fruits, which represents a major challenge for modern vegetable farming.
