Description

Benyvirus is a genus of plant viruses responsible for significant agricultural diseases, most notably rhizomania in sugar beets. The most critical pathogen in this group is the Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV). These viruses are known for their specific interaction with a soil-borne fungal vector, which complicates control measures significantly.

The virus relies entirely on the plasmodiophorid fungus Polymyxa betae for transmission. The virus particles are transmitted when zoospores of the fungus infect the roots of a host plant. Because the fungus produces resting spores that remain viable in the soil for several years, contaminated fields can serve as a source of infection for a long duration, even in the absence of a host crop.

The primary hosts for Benyvirus are various species within the Beta genus, specifically sugar beet, fodder beet, and red beet. While the impact is most severe in commercial sugar beet production, the virus can also persist in various weed species that may act as latent reservoirs, making field sanitation difficult to implement perfectly.

Key symptoms and diagnostic signs include:

  • abnormal root proliferation, often referred to as "root bearding";
  • stunting of the plant and significant reduction in overall yield;
  • yellowing of leaf veins (chlorosis) or necrosis in advanced stages;
  • reduced sugar content in the root;
  • rapid wilting of leaves during periods of water stress.

Economic damage caused by Benyvirus is extensive due to the permanent reduction in root weight and sucrose concentration. Preventive strategies are centered on integrated pest management (IPM). Key practices include the planting of resistant or tolerant beet varieties, which is the most effective defense, alongside soil drainage improvement to reduce fungal activity, proper crop rotation, and strict equipment hygiene to prevent the spread of contaminated soil between fields.
