Description

The Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV) is a member of the Benyvirus genus and serves as the causative agent of the economically devastating disease known as rhizomania. The virus is soil-borne and relies exclusively on the plasmodiophorid protist Polymyxa betae for transmission. The vector produces resting spores that can persist in the soil for over 15 years, ensuring the virus's long-term survival in fields.

The virus primarily affects Beta vulgaris, including sugar beet, fodder beet, and Swiss chard. Infections typically begin when the zoospores of the vector infect the root hairs of the plant. As the virus replicates, it forces the plant to alter its growth patterns, leading to severe physiological disruptions that impact the plant's ability to store sugar and transport nutrients.

The most distinctive symptom above ground is the yellowing of leaf veins, which often occurs in patches throughout the field. However, the most damaging symptoms are found below ground. The virus causes an abnormal proliferation of lateral rootlets, leading to the characteristic "hairy root" appearance known as rhizomania. The central taproot is usually stunted, becomes woody, and shows vascular necrosis in cross-section.

Environmental factors play a crucial role in the spread of the disease. BNYVV thrives in cool, moist, and poorly drained soils, as these conditions are optimal for the motility of the Polymyxa betae vector. The disease is spread globally through the movement of infested soil clinging to agricultural equipment, farm machinery, or footwear, making sanitation a critical component of disease management.

Managing rhizomania requires an integrated approach. The most effective strategy is the planting of resistant or tolerant sugar beet varieties, which have been bred to limit virus replication or mitigate yield loss. Crop rotation, while helpful in reducing the vector population, is often insufficient due to the long-term survival of the vector. Therefore, improving soil drainage and ensuring strict machinery hygiene are essential steps to contain the spread.
