Rice shoot necrosis virus (Benyvirus oryzae) is a significant plant pathogen that affects rice crops globally. As a member of the Benyvirus genus, this virus disrupts the physiological functions of the host plant, leading to stunted growth and potentially severe economic losses in the rice industry.
The primary host for this pathogen is cultivated rice (Oryza sativa). The virus typically infects the root system, spreading systemically throughout the plant. Young seedlings are particularly vulnerable, and infection at early growth stages can significantly hamper the plant's ability to reach maturity.
Typical symptoms of infection include chlorosis, necrotic spotting on leaf tissues, and yellowing of the leaves. Infected plants often exhibit reduced tillering, leaf deformation, and stunted stalks. These signs are critical indicators for agronomists to identify the presence of the virus during field surveys.
The spread of Benyvirus oryzae is largely dependent on soil-borne vectors. These vectors thrive in waterlogged conditions typical of rice paddies, facilitating the transmission of the virus from infected soil to healthy roots. Consequently, areas with poor water management are often at higher risk of experiencing disease outbreaks.

These include the use of certified disease-free seeds, cultivation of resistant rice varieties, and rigorous field hygiene to manage potential vectors and eliminate alternative hosts.
