Beet necrotic yellow vein virus, known by its formal name Benyvirus solibetae, is the causative agent of the devastating rhizomania disease in sugar beets. This viral infection drastically impacts the vascular system of the taproot, severely limiting sugar accumulation and causing significant economic losses in beet production worldwide.

The virus relies on the soil-borne plasmodiophorid Polymyxa betae to survive and infect plants. The virus resides within the resting spores of this fungal vector, allowing it to persist in the soil for decades, making total eradication nearly impossible once a field has become infested.

The most distinctive symptom of rhizomania is the proliferation of fine lateral root hairs, a condition commonly referred to as "bearding." The main taproot often becomes stunted, tapered like a rat's tail, and exhibits dark discoloration of the vascular tissues. Foliar symptoms include stunted growth, yellowing veins, and leaf chlorosis.

Disease outbreaks are heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly soil moisture and temperature. High soil moisture, typical of poorly drained fields, facilitates the movement of the fungal vector's zoospores. The disease spreads primarily through the movement of infested soil attached to farm equipment and machinery.

Management strategies for rhizomania focus on integrated crop protection. Growers should prioritize the planting of genetically resistant sugar beet varieties, as these are the most effective defense against yield loss. Furthermore, cultural practices such as improving field drainage, strictly cleaning machinery between fields, and limiting the movement of soil are crucial for preventing the further spread of the pathogen.
