Betabaculovirus is a genus of viruses within the Baculoviridae family, serving as specialized entomopathogens. Unlike diseases affecting plant tissues directly, these viruses are classified as beneficial agents in agriculture because they specifically target and infect insect pests, providing a sustainable alternative to chemical insecticides.

The infectious agent is the granulovirus, characterized by microscopic inclusion bodies that encapsulate the viral DNA. The infection follows a strictly defined pathway: the insect consumes the virus through contaminated plant tissues, and the alkaline gut environment triggers the release of the virions, which then invade the host's cells, leading to a fatal systemic infection.

Various agricultural crops, particularly orchards and vegetable fields, suffer from lepidopteran pests that are highly susceptible to these viruses. The codling moth is a primary target of Betabaculovirus-based biopesticides, allowing farmers to significantly reduce pest pressure while maintaining the ecological balance of the orchard ecosystem.

Symptoms of the disease in insects involve distinct physiological changes: infected larvae exhibit reduced mobility, cessation of feeding, and characteristic discoloration. As the virus replicates, the larva's internal tissues decompose into a liquefied mass, which eventually ruptures the cuticle, releasing millions of new viral particles into the environment to spread the infection.

To maximize the efficacy of these biological control agents, specific management strategies must be employed. Application should be timed with the peak of egg-laying or early larval stages, and since UV radiation degrades the virus quickly, timing treatments for late afternoon or evening is essential for achieving successful control and minimizing population outbreaks.
