Betabaculovirus adoranae is a specialized entomopathogenic virus belonging to the Baculoviridae family. Unlike plant diseases that infect crops, this virus is a biological control agent that specifically targets the larvae of the summer fruit tortrix moth, Adoxophyes orana. In modern agronomy, it serves as a cornerstone for sustainable and integrated pest management programs.
The pathogen is classified as a granulovirus. When larvae ingest the viral granules while feeding on foliage, the high alkalinity of the insect's midgut dissolves the occlusion bodies, releasing the infectious virions. These virions then invade the epithelial cells and replicate rapidly throughout the insect's body, causing a fatal disease known as granulosis.
Host crops for the pest include a wide variety of pomaceous and stone fruits, primarily apples and pears.
