Betachrysovirus alternariae is a mycovirus that specifically infects fungal species belonging to the genus Alternaria. Classified within the Chrysoviridae family, this virus possesses a segmented double-stranded RNA genome. Unlike typical plant viruses, its primary host is the fungus itself, which acts as a pathogen to various agricultural crops.
This virus targets various Alternaria species responsible for leaf spots, blights, and other significant diseases on crops like potatoes, tomatoes, and wheat. The infection occurs intracellularly, where the virus utilizes the host fungus's machinery for its replication, potentially interfering with normal fungal physiological processes.
The most notable symptoms of infection in the fungus are characterized by a phenomenon known as hypovirulence.
