Betachrysovirus magnaporthis is a distinct mycovirus that infects the fungus Pyricularia oryzae (also known as Magnaporthe oryzae), the causal agent of rice blast disease. As a mycovirus, it replicates within the fungal cells, interacting with the host's machinery without directly infecting the plant tissue itself.
The virus is characterized by its dsRNA genome and belongs to the Chrysoviridae family. Its primary transmission mechanism involves the fusion of fungal hyphae and vertical transmission via conidia. The scientific interest in this virus stems from its potential to induce hypovirulence, which may reduce the destructive capacity of the rice blast pathogen.
The host plants affected by the virus-carrying fungi are primarily rice (Oryza sativa).
