Description
Betacytorhabdovirus is a genus of plant-infecting viruses within the Rhabdoviridae family. These viruses contain a single-stranded RNA genome and are characterized by their distinct bacilliform particle shape. The diseases caused by this genus are systemic, affecting the plant's vascular tissue and significantly interfering with essential metabolic functions, leading to chronic illness in the host plant.
A wide variety of crops are susceptible to these viruses, ranging from staple cereals to various vegetables and legumes. These pathogens are known to cause significant economic losses by infecting potatoes, tomatoes, wheat, and barley. Once a plant is infected, the virus spreads through the phloem to all parts of the organism, causing irreversible physiological damage.
Symptoms often manifest as complex phenotypic changes that directly affect the plant's health and productivity. The primary signs of infection include:
- severe yellowing and mosaic patterns on leaves;
- stunted growth and poor overall plant vigor;

These insects feed on infected sap, acquiring the virus and transmitting it to healthy plants during subsequent feeding events. Environmental factors, such as temperature and humidity, play a critical role in controlling vector population dynamics, which in turn determines the rate of viral spread within agricultural landscapes.
The economic impact of this disease is high due to decreased crop quality and significant yield reductions. To mitigate the threat, farmers should prioritize integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. These include the rigorous control of weed reservoirs, monitoring and applying insecticides to manage vector populations, and the implementation of phytosanitary protocols to prevent the introduction of infected material into production areas.
