Description
Rice transitory yellowing virus (Betacytorhabdovirus oryzae) is a significant plant pathogen that causes a systemic disease in rice crops. As a member of the Rhabdoviridae family, the virus primarily affects the vascular system of the host plant, severely disrupting normal physiological functions and development.
Rice (Oryza sativa) is the main host for this pathogen. The disease is primarily prevalent in Asian countries, where its impact on agricultural output is substantial. The virus has a high potential for causing economic losses, as infected plants often fail to produce viable grain, leading to significant yield reductions.
Symptoms of the infection include chlorosis, specifically a yellowing or orange-yellow discoloration of the older leaves. As the infection progresses, the plant exhibits stunted growth, reduced tillering, and inhibited root system development. In severe cases, the panicles fail to emerge, resulting in absolute sterility of the infected plant.
The transmission of this virus is strictly dependent on insect vectors, primarily leafhoppers such as Nephotettix virescens. The virus replicates within the insect, and once acquired, the vector remains infectious for the rest of its life cycle. Environmental conditions like high humidity and moderate temperatures significantly enhance both the insect population and the spread of the virus.
