Description
Betanecrovirus is a genus of plant viruses that cause significant necrosis in various horticultural and field crops. The most well-studied member of this genus is the Tobacco Necrosis Virus (TNV), which typically manifests through localized lesions that can progress into systemic damage depending on the host plant species and environmental conditions.
The virus particles are non-enveloped, icosahedral, and contain single-stranded RNA. Unlike many other viruses that spread via insect vectors, betanecroviruses are primarily soil-borne. They exhibit remarkable stability in the environment, remaining infectious in soil debris or water for extended periods, making them persistent challenges for commercial greenhouse operations.
Host crops for this virus range from essential vegetables like cucumbers and tomatoes to ornamental flowers such as tulips. The disease impacts the plant's vascular and metabolic functions, leading to reduced photosynthetic capacity and stunted overall development. In severe cases, the entire plant may collapse due to root system degradation.
Transmission occurs predominantly through the chytrid fungus Olpidium brassicae. The virus infects the zoospores of this fungus, which then transport the viral particles into the root cortex of the host plant. This symbiotic-like relationship between the virus and the fungus vector makes soil moisture management a critical factor in disease control.
