Tobacco necrosis virus (Betanecrovirus nicotianae) is a significant plant pathogen affecting a broad array of agricultural and ornamental species. Classified within the genus Betanecrovirus, this virus is characterized by its ability to persist in the environment for extended periods, causing severe economic losses in sensitive crops.

The host range of this virus is remarkably wide. It infects major economic crops such as tobacco, potatoes, beans, cucumbers, and legumes. Ornamental plants, especially bulbous species like tulips, are frequently affected, which can lead to significant floral malformation and loss of aesthetic value in commercial floriculture.

Symptoms of infection are highly variable depending on the host and environmental conditions. Common manifestations include localized necrotic lesions on leaves, systemic mosaic patterns, stunting of the overall plant growth, and root necrosis. In some tubers, such as potatoes, the virus can cause necrotic spots that penetrate deep into the tissue.

The transmission mechanism of the Tobacco necrosis virus is unique, as it relies on a soil-borne chytrid fungus, Olpidium brassicae. The virus is carried within the fungal zoospores, which facilitate infection when they encounter plant roots. Because the fungal vector persists in soil as resting spores, the virus can remain infectious for several years without the presence of a host plant.

Management of the disease focuses primarily on vector control and preventative sanitary measures. Since there are no chemical virucides available, integrated pest management is essential:

  • Soil sterilization or steam treatment in greenhouse environments.
  • Utilizing crop rotation to disrupt the life cycle of the fungal vector.
  • Implementing strict sanitation to prevent the spread of contaminated soil.
  • Selecting resistant or tolerant cultivars when available.
Prevention remains the most effective strategy to safeguard agricultural production from this persistent viral pathogen.
